If you鈥檙e in the midst of your college search process, I鈥檓 fairly certain it鈥檚 different than you imagined it would be. The journey of finding your dream school was never intended to be fully virtual, and clearly this format presents some challenges. That said, there are still ways to get to know the college where you鈥檙e applying—and ways to show them your best self. Below are my top tips to help you make the most of your virtual college search!

Take advantage of increased flexibility.

I realize that it鈥檚 not the same to visit a college on your computer screen, and that it鈥檚 tough spending so much time at home. That said, our current environment does open up some new possibilities when it comes to learning about colleges.聽 If you live in Boston and you want to visit colleges in Seattle, that鈥檚 no easy task during a standard year. But with increased virtual offerings, video meetings consistently available, and flexible hours to meet with admissions staff, it just got a lot easier to broaden your search!聽 Whether that means considering new locations without having to travel, or attending additional events you may not have had time for previously, getting information just got a lot more convenient. So take advantage of the increased possibilities and sign up for what鈥檚 being offered; there鈥檚 literally no down side!

Be present, even if not physically.

There鈥檚 always a temptation with virtual events to be a silent observer, or worse, to just log in and check out. I know Zoom fatigue is real, but you鈥檒l get so much more out of your virtual programming if you come ready to participate. Whether you鈥檙e able to show your face and physically speak up or not, you can still be an active participant. Ask questions, take notes, and follow up with schools you鈥檙e interested in. Use chat to ask specific questions, or better yet, use your voice and speak up! We want to see that real people are out there listening, and putting a face with a name helps us know you鈥檙e interested and remember you in the future. Plus, the more engaged you are, the more you鈥檒l take away from the event. The point should always be to find out how each school can be a good fit for you; you can get facts from the website, but answering your questions is what university staff are there to do.

Take a virtual tour.

Again, in person is the gold standard when it comes to seeing and experiencing a college鈥檚 atmosphere. However, virtual tours can still be incredibly informative and can help you begin to picture yourself (or not) on campus.聽 Many schools have a self-guided tour, and some offer a guided tour with a staff member or student ambassador. My advice is to give it a try, and make note of where you want to prioritize an in-person tour when possible.

Make an appointment with an admission rep.

Now that most admission counselors and representatives aren鈥檛 physically traveling to high schools this fall, we have more time to set up meetings with students 鈥� many now offered virtually for the first time. We know this process can be daunting, and we want to get to know you so we can help. So don鈥檛 be shy! Plus, scheduling an appointment demonstrates your interest and investment in the college. Meetings with admission counselors can be used to learn more about the college in general, exploring majors, financial aid, the application, campus life, and more. Get the information you need!
