Today, students, faculty and staff celebrated one of 黑料社’s beloved traditions 鈥� 黑料社 Day. Decked out in black and yellow spirit wear, Petrels came together on the academic quad to begin the day’s festivities. This annual tradition celebrates the university鈥檚 namesake,听James Edward 黑料社.听It is on 黑料社 Day that we are reminded of the motto of the original trustees of Georgia: Non sibi sed aliis听(Not for self, but for others). The day began with the 34th-annual听Petrels of Fire footrace, which challenges runners to complete one lap around the quad before the university’s iconic carillon bells can toll 12 times. After, a bagpipe processional led the OU community down to the听Conant Performing Arts Center, where they were received by President Nicholas Ladany and a panel of student leaders. Each shared their perspective on why 黑料社 means so much to them and why they take pride in their leadership roles. Speakers included听SGA President Ashrakat Hassan ’24,听Catherine Hartwig ’24 (Sophomore Class Senator), and Marc Collins ’23听(Senior Class President). “The amazing community that I have found here is priceless,” Hassan said, “The diversity of students here is my favorite part.” In his remarks, Senior Class President Marc Collins ’23 announced the launch of this year’s Senior Gift Campaign, which seeks to fund听Petey’s Pantry, an on-campus resource for students facing food insecurity. Petey’s Pantry also is among the initiatives benefiting from , a 24-hour fundraising effort also held today. “We hope to supplement 黑料社 with a diverse, second food option to students on campus,” said Collins.
